Lets talk about the correct way to change filter sand.

So many people think that changing filter sand is an easy task, however if done incorrectly you may as well throw the filter away because you will have endless problems with it. So let us look at a step by step guide to change filter sand.
Step 1: Begin by removing the sand filters lid. This usually is done by undoing the screws at the top around the lid.
Step 2: Once the screws have been removed, lift the lid off and put the screws and washers back into the threaded holes as this will prevent sand going in there.
Step 3: Now take a small plastic bag and put it over the tube you see at the top of the filter if yours does not have one do not panic just yet.
Step 4: Now you have 1 of 2 choices to remove the sand. Either do it by hand or use a sand filter removal manual pump attached is a link for what it looks like. Remember this method requires the filter the have water in it or it will not work.
Step 5: Once you get to the bottom you will notice long plastic like fingers in a star format, usually between 8 – 12 depending on the filter. These are called filter laterals or fingers. Check that they are not damaged and sitting snug before putting the new sand. Becareful not to damage these because if they get damaged you will have sand coming back into your pool and it aint pretty.
Step 6: Once the sand is out, take a hose and spray the filter out removing the last of the filter sand out.
Step 7: Now put the new sand into the filter and once done remove the plastic bag from the breather pipe which you covered in the start of this.
Step 8: Remove the screws from the holes and put the lid back on. Tighten the lid in a star format as this will ensure a flat and flush fit.
Step 9: Run a backwash and rinse cycle of 1 minute each then put back to filter and Bobs your uncle.
