Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaner, Healthier Water
change pool sand is a must for any swimming pool and this needs to be done once a year. Perhaps you are a DIY enthusiast or just an average Joe wanting to save a few Rands and want to change your own sand.
We will walk you through the process but be warned this is not a job for the weak, it is hard work, strain on your back and can take up to 40 minutes.
Here is what you will need:
- Medium sized flat head screwdriver
- Plastic sleeve such as a freezer bag or similar
- Medium sized bucket
- Wheel barrow
Instructions to follow:
- First begin by undoing the screws on the filter lid, there are usually between 8-16 depending on the type of filter you have.
- The next step is to remove the lid and put all the screws and washers back into the holes, this will ensure no sand gets in the threads.
- Now at the top of the filter you should see a white filter type head? cover the filter with the freezer bag. This will ensure no sand goes into the tube and blocks it.
- Once that is done start removing the sand. You will only be able to fit 1 hand in depending on the size of your hand or filter. Put the old sand into the wheel barrow.
- As you get closer to the bottom of the filter you will feel long plastic like fingers (laterals) in a star formation. Do not break these or bend them in anyway. You can remove them if they are damaged by screwing them out or clipping them out, it depends on the make of the filter.
- Once all the sand is out take a bucket of water and wash the access sand which spilled on the filter. You can now spray the inside of the filter out with a hose.
- Put the new sand into the filter and remove the plastic freezer bag off the top filter and remove the screws out the lid threads.
- Put the filter lid back and start screwing in the screws in a star format. Example top center 12 oclock, bottom center 6 oclock, right 3 oclock, left 9 oclock, etc etc…
- Now run a backwash 1 min and a rinse 1 minute cycle and lastly put onto filter and you are done.
