Robotic pool cleaners are awesome, they have come down in price a lot compared to 2 or 3 years ago. But let us begin with the basics.
How do Robotic Pool Cleaners work?
Unlike an average pool cleaner which runs with pipes running from the head of the pool cleaner into the weir,which is reliant on a pool pump to cause suction, Robotic pool cleaners have their own motor so even if you did not have a pool pump it would still work. They also do not rely on a weir to catch debris as they are equipped with their own catch net in the actual unit.
Unlike traditional suction cleaners that wander randomly, modern robotic cleaners feature built-in microprocessors, gyroscopes, and smart sensors. These components scan the pool to map its dimensions, depth, and obstacles such as stairs or drains. The mapping allows the robotic pool cleaner to calculate the best & most efficient route, ensuring every inch of the pool is systematically covered without wasting energy.

Robotic Pool Cleaners are either powered by a low-voltage transformer plugged into a wall outlet via a floating cord, or a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for cordless models. They have Built-in drive motors power wheels or rubberized tracks, allowing the robot to grip surfaces, climb walls, and maneuver around curved transitions or steps.
These machine work in 3 stages:
1st stage is the robot travels, cylindrical scrubbers or micro-brushes spin against the pool’s finish to loosen stubborn dirt, bio-slime, and algae.
2nd stage: Debris is captured in onboard filter baskets or pleated cartridges. These can range from standard mesh (for larger leaves and twigs) to “nano-filters”
3rd stage: Once the water is separated from the debris, it is expelled out the top of the robot, which also helps keep the unit pressed firmly against the pool floor or wall.
