How the owner started the pool courses idea.
South Africa is a great country and the people who live here are some of the best people in the world. But like most countries, people are so scared of someone stealing the business from them that they become selfish.
I remember when I started North side pool services 10 years ago…how time flies! I remember wishing someone could show me how to do certain things.
Actually in general just knowing what other people knew about pools, how they did it, how they got clients etc. Unfortunatley I never had that opportunity. As mentioned people are strange. So what did I do? I did what everyone else was doing, and that was to study. Now they wont tell you this, but the pool industry is not something you can study for. It is more a hands on industry, but none the less I began the journey.
Yes I done the course I.O.P.S.A and the course with the building council of SA. I am sorry to say this but other than gaining the knowledge of everything it did not help me. They do not teach you the things one really needs to know. For instance working in small spaces with a pool above you, watch what happens when you cut a pipe and get flooded out. Or a simple method of learning what Ph actually is. I could go on and on but you get my point.
End of the day in a nut shell I spent money for nothing, and I was right back at the beggining where I started. At the time I was gaining clients by the day, and thank God they were understanding people. The amount of pools i messed up learning on my own was a big number. I used to sometimes get up at 5am and go to clients miles away to do small plumbing jobs. The same plumbing jobs which today would take me a minute to complete. But back then it took me an entire day to do. I spent hours and hours watching You tube clips, going to plumbing companies and driving around with them. It was through consistency and persistency that I learned the pool trade.
Now in this industry it is always advisable to keep learning, never limit yourself, there is always something new to learn.
I love the pool industry, it is a very good industry to make money but you also have to be willing to spend money on advertising, branding and decent staff.
Been a company without branding and a professional look will tell clients that you are not reputable. Clients will hardly ever go for a company that does not represent themselves in a proper manner. So anyway how I started this swimming pool courses, was I just looked back at all the things I done wrong. I realised that by making those mistakes I learned, but what if others didnt have to make those mistakes? and instead they could just get it right 1st time and feel confident in what they do?
Yes it could mean a sales drop for swimming pool companies. But it is not like there is a shortage of swimming pools in Johannesburg. There are new places been build daily so what is the issue? As a pool business owner I know that in a year there are plenty days that companies are quite. One will always need to look for a way to make money while the times are quite. This is my way of still been in the industry and not straying too far away if you know what I am saying. I realise that places like the N.S.P.I will have something to say about this as the certificate is not yet accredited. But it will be soon, and as far as I am concerned I mind my own business. I dont liase with the niche on that side so they actually have nothing to do with me and like wise from their side.
