Why is my heat pump not heating the pool?

Why is your heat pump not heating your pool ?

There are thousands of people who went out and purchased heat pumps because they were told that they could get 40 degree heated water! Ok lets face it that is a bit on the false side and even if it were true you would not be able to get in as you would simply cook yourself alive.

But let us say you went out and purchased a heat pump hoping for just an extra 5 or 6 degrees because your pool only gets around 21 degrees on a good day but after forking out the price for the machine and installation,  you are not actually getting much more than what you always had! See below the most common causes as to why it may not be heating.

  1.  So 1st off is the heat pump new or old? We ask this as not many people sell second hand units and if they do there usually is a problem with it.
  2. Where is the unit located? Location is everything when it comes to getting the most out of your heat pump so you will always want it to be smack bang in the sun, as this will give the heat pump a hotter temperature to start with making it easier to heat your pool.
  3. Make sure that the heat pump is not right up against a wall or enclosed area. Remember a heat pump needs ventilation and a lot of it.
  4. Is the unit plumbed correctly? We have seen many installations done incorrectly and even thou the system has no red lights to say it is wrong or right, be sure to check the plumbing is correct.
  5. Are you using a cover or solar blanket? Another important fact here is in order to heat your pool without a cover or blanket is actually going to take so much longer to do, this is because as the water starts getting hot the heat is escaping just like a pot of water on a stove, if you try boil water on a stove without a lid notice how long it takes but put a lid on and it is boiling in no time and the same thing applies here.
  6. Settings – Usually it is not advisable to change any settings on the heat pump this is because if you manage to somehow get into the factory settings and change anything there, you will usually require a technician to come restore the settings because it gets very complicated. However most heat pumps work the same and all you have to do is wait till the machines display is in stand bye mode then simply push the up and down arrows to adjust the temperature to your liking.
  7. Is the fan of the heat pump coming on? A common cause here and that is your display is on and no warming lights come on but your fan is not turning, this means it is not heating at all and you should replace or repair the unit.
