What is all the hype about Salt vs Chlorine pools in Johannesburg?

I have always been a more logical thinker and I have had both chlorine and salt pools. I am sorry to say this but having a salt pool is much more expensive than a chlorine pool depending on how your setup is installed.

Installation 1: The cheap routeĀ

This installation requires no salt chlorinator and filters the salt through the sand filter. To start you add the amount of salt bags to your pool and then add a floater or chlorine manually. The hygiene factor is much more effective than chlorine pools and the only difference here is you adding salt and chlorine manually.

Installation 2: The expensive and correct way

This installation requires you to purchase the correct salt chlorinator according to your pools volume. These units can range anything from R6000 - R24 000

You then have 2 options which are self-cleaning or self-chlorinating whats the difference? Exactly what the name suggests, one cleans itself and the other does not. One self-chlorinates and the other not.

In my opinion chlorine kills bacteria and germs, salt does the same thing and unless you are really over the edge on hygiene then don't waste your money. I say this because I have yet to see these units last longer than 2 to 3 years before completely bombing out.
